Protect your Home from Extreme Cold Weather!

Our local meteorologist in Atlanta are calling for MUCH colder weather this weekend!

We have some tips for you to make sure your home is ready for the extreme cold weather!

Inside the house:

  • Keep your house heated to a minimum of 65 degrees.

  • Check the location for the main water shut off in your home.

  • Open hot and cold faucets enough to let them drip slowly.

  • Check that fireplaces and heat is working properly

  • Keep you fireplace flue closed when you are not using it

  • Ask a neighbor to check on the house regularly any time you are away.

Outside the house:

  • Keep sidewalks and entrances to your home free from ice.

  • Watch for ice dams near gutter downspouts.

  • Run your swimming pool pump at night when temperatures are expected to go below freezing.

  • Keep your garage doors closed.

  • Double check for dead, damaged or dangerous tree branches and have them removed.

In the event of a problem:

Quick Action can significantly minimize the damage to weather related issues in the home. Your standard home insurance policy is likely to provide coverage.

  • Don't wait for frozen pipes to burst- If your pipes are frozen, take measures to thaw them immediately, or call a plumber for assistance.

  • If your pipes burst, first turn off the water- You know now where the main water shut off is, right? Cut off the flow, then attend to the mess.

  • Properly dry and repair any water damage.- This will help prevent any potential problems with mold.

  • Call our office or the claims office as soon as possible. We will help you understand what's covered by your policy.
